When the Last Contractor Left — We Showed Up

A real story about trust, flexibility, and what it means to actually finish the job.

We get a lot of calls that start with excitement — a homeowner ready to transform their kitchen, finish their basement, or finally tackle that bathroom remodel they’ve been putting off.

But some calls start differently.

This one started with frustration. A homeowner in Woodville, Wisconsin had hired an unlicensed contractor to remodel her bathroom. He took the job, started the work — and then stopped showing up. She was left with a half-demolished bathroom, no answers, and no idea who to trust next.

She called us.

Walking Into Someone Else’s Mess

When we walked through the door, the bathroom told the whole story. The toilet was sitting in the middle of the floor. The old tub and surround had been partially removed. Walls were unfinished, framing was exposed, and the plumbing hadn’t been touched correctly. It wasn’t just unfinished — a significant amount of it had to be redone entirely.

This is one of the real risks of hiring unlicensed contractors. There’s no accountability, no insurance, and often no recourse when things go wrong. It’s a situation we see more than we’d like — and every time, it reminds us why licensing, experience, and integrity actually matter.

The Scope of Work: Phase 1

Here’s what we tackled to get this bathroom functional, safe, and finished:

Relocated and re-plumbed the toilet — properly this time

Removed the old tub and surround and converted the space to a stand-up shower

Ran all new water lines and drains under the floor

Plumbed and ran new lines for the washer and dryer

Installed a new vanity, toilet, and shower — all done right

That’s a significant amount of work. And it all had to be done correctly from the ground up.

Building a Plan That Actually Worked for Her

Here’s where our approach looked a little different.

The full scope of what the bathroom needed — including Phase 2 finishing work like LVP flooring, paint, and trim — was more than she could afford to tackle all at once. A lot of contractors would have walked away at that point. We didn’t.

Instead, we sat down together and built a phased plan. Phase 1 covered the critical structural and plumbing work — getting the bathroom safe, functional, and finished to a standard she’d be proud of. Phase 2 is already on the calendar and starts this coming weekend.

This is what client-first work actually looks like. It’s not about maximizing the invoice. It’s about finding a path forward that works for the real person in front of you.

The Result

When Phase 1 was complete, she left us this review:

“Thank you for coming into a mess and redoing almost everything that the other contractor started. You went above and beyond what you quoted and I’m so happy with the way it all turned out!!”

She also left us a 5-star Google review. We’re proud of every one of those stars — because each one represents a homeowner who trusted us with their space and felt that trust was honored.

We’re Not Done Yet

Phase 2 starts this weekend — LVP flooring, primer, paint, and trim. The job isn’t finished until she’s completely happy, and we’ll be there until it is.

That’s the ACA Contracting promise. Not just on this project. On every single one.
